10 MANTRAS OF PHARM TABLE KITCHEN

10 MANTRAS OF PHARM TABLE KITCHEN

10 MANTRAS OF PHARM TABLE

1. Breathe and be mindful!

2. Eat until you are 80% full. Ideally, maintain a balance of 30/30/30 of food/air/water in your stomach when you eat.

3. Avoid acidic foods (too much dairy, animal proteins, sugar, processed foods, coffee).

4. Favor alkaline foods, such as citrus and plant-based foods.

5. Avoid iced or carbonated drinks. Instead drink room temperature water or hot tea. Cold or carbonated foods slow digestion in the body, which strives to maintain a 98-degree environment.

6. Eat probiotic-rich foods (fermented foods), like kombucha and kimchi.

7. Consume all 6 flavors at every meal to satisfy and balance your body. These include pungent, sour, sweet, salty, bitter and astringent.

8. Sprout and soak your dry ingredients for increased fiber, nutrition, and ease of digestion.

9. Create complete amino proteins with plants by combining the right foods.

10. Eat plants that are local and honor the seasons, and eat foods that pacify your dosha (body type) and are pacifying to the season/your dosha.

Why We Love Kitchari

Why We Love Kitchari

Kitchari is a healthful Indian dish traditionally made with yellow mung dal, basmati rice, spices that encourage digestion and ghee (clarified butter). You can easily find all of these products at the grocery store or come to Pharm Table and let us make it for you! We often like to use quinoa in our kitchari bowls to make them even healthier. Our new summer menu includes a satiating Indian-style kitchari bowl as well as a Southeast Asian-influenced kitchari.

As you probably know, proper digestion is integral to our health. In India and the states, people who practice Ayurveda use kitchari as a mono-nutrient fast that gives the digestive system a much-needed respite. When most people hear the words fast, cleanse or detox, they often associate them with starvation, but this doesn't have to be, nor should it be, the case. You can cleanse gently and we believe, deliciously, with kitchari.

Pharm Table's Rejuvenating Culinary Cleanse includes a kitchari bowl each day for lunch. It's actually a very hearty and satisfying dish, and we like to get creative with our kitchari so that you really don't get bored. Our Persian kitchari bowl, for example, is made with sprouted bi-color quinoa, sprouted green lentils, beets, watermelon radishes, kale, collard greens, sumac & za'atar, ginger, black pepper, pipalli.

The nutrients found in kitchari provide the body with a copious amount of amino acids, which is the foundation of a protein. Proteins are the building blocks of life – every single cell in our bodies needs protein, and protein from non-animal sources are more alkalizing for the body (i.e. less inflammatory).

A fast or cleanse can actually consist mainly of kitchari. With the help of ghee, these Ayurvedic powerhouses increase the internal fire, called agni, that balances digestion and metabolism. Try eating kitchari for three days straight or simply sign up for our new culinary cleanse to get fit. It will change your life!

At Pharm Table, we integrate elements of Ayurveda and Macrobiotics, as well as follow research from the Harvard School of Public Health and National Geographic Blue Zones Research. If you’re asking yourself what is Ayurveda, you might be surprised to learn it’s a centuries-old system of natural healing that comes from the Vedic culture in India.

Ayurveda, which means Life Knowledge/Science, is rooted in nature, the seasons, and in the body’s natural functions, connecting the mind, body and spirit with the environment. By identifying how the three fundamental energies – Pitta (Fire), Vata (wind), and Kapha (earth) – influence and express themselves through your own unique body type, you can more easily balance these aspects. Ayurveda offers tried and true guidelines that do just that. Tasting is believing!

Order your Gift Certificate TODAY and help your Mom take that first step towards a healthier and happier lifestyle!

The Peppery Power of Pippali

The Peppery Power of Pippali

Have you ever heard of Pippali?

You might not have heard of it, but if you've been to Pharm Table, you might have already eaten it! We use it all the time to season our healthy dishes, including the food in our Rejuvenating 3-Day Culinary Cleanse. Pippali is Kapha pacifying, which means it is a good ingredient for the winter and spring months.

Pippali, or Pippali Rasayan, is an Indian long pepper fruit and one of the most popular Ayurvedic herbs. The name means “to drink and digest”, which is fitting since its primary benefit is digesting and burning toxins. In the world of Ayurveda, Pippali is a powerful culinary spice and tridoshic herb, meaning it's good for all body types. These oblong pods are often ground up and used just like its cousin, black pepper, although Pippali is less spicy, more earthy-flavored, and a beautiful army green color.

The health benefits are extensive. Traditionally, Pippali has been used for colds, digestive problems, reproductive issues, insomnia, cramps, congestion and many other ailments. In fact, South Texans who suffer from allergies might appreciate its soothing abilities. Throw a little Pippali on just about any dish or visit us at Pharm Table for lunch or dinner, and we'll put a dash on for you!
