Turmeric: Superfood Spotlight
The Pharm Table kitchen strives to utilize heritage foods and superfoods.
This week's superfood spotlight falls on turmeric.
Traditionally linked to Ayurvedic medicine in India and other parts of Asia, turmeric has long been prized for its anti-inflammatory properties.
Turmeric gets many of its health benefits, as well as its striking yellow color, from a natural compound called curcumin.
Turmeric can be used to aid with inflammation of the joints, skin and digestive tract. It also has mood-elevating properties and helps boost the body's natural antioxidant capacity.

Although turmeric makes a great addition to any dish, it is best consumed with black pepper, which helps the body better absorb curcumin. Curcumin in turmeric is also fat-soluble, so consider using a high-fat oil like coconut oil when cooking with turmeric.
